Robertson Trust 50th Anniversary Grant

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

Cancer Support Scotland is offering more support than ever to those affected by cancer, thanks to a generous grant from the Robertson Trust.

The charity, which is situated at the Gartnavel Hospital complex and adjacent to the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, provides complementary therapies, counselling sessions and support groups to those living with cancer.

The award of £90,000 over a two year period will significantly boost Cancer SupportScotland’s service provision at a time when demand is rocketing, with around 14% more people walking through the centre doors each month.

This grant from the Robertson Trust, which is Scotland’s largest independent funder, was awarded as part of a special scheme celebrating the organisation’s 50th Anniversary milestone and saw £2.5m shared between 37 different charities across the country.

Kenneth Ferguson, Director of the Robertson Trust, said: “Cancer Support Scotland has a fantastic track record of service delivery within the community and this award will mark a great improvement in the services they are able to provide to everyone affected by cancer – from those living with the disease to their relatives and friends as well.”

The charity is currently undergoing a period of transformation as it prepares to move into a new custom-renovated building at Gartnavel which is to become the Calman Cancer Support Centre, named after the charity’s founder Professor Sir Kenneth Calman.

The Grade B listed former church will make great use of the service provision funding from the Robertson Trust by providing extra treatment rooms for complementary therapies and counselling, a hair advisory service and salon, a library and information centre, meeting areas for support groups, a café and a peaceful courtyard garden.

Cancer Support Scotland CEO Colin Graham said: “The Robertson Trust has had a long association with Cancer Support Scotland and we are delighted to have been awarded this funding to support our service provision.

“As we move to the new Calman Cancer Support Centre, this grant will allow us to double our provision of complementary therapies and counselling while developing new services to meet the ever increasing demand for support.”
