St. Enoch Centre has selected Cancer Support Scotland as its Charity of the Year 2012/13 and will be holding a public event in the Centre to mark the auspicious partnership.
To mark the launch of the charity partnership St. Enoch Centre will be hosting a fundraising event ‘Rub Shoulders to Raise Pounds’ on Saturday, July 28. Shoppers will be encouraged to form an enormous chain of people and rub the shoulders of the person in front demonstrating a simple way to make anyone feel more relaxed.
Volunteers from the charity will also be providing hand massages, head and shoulder massages, talking therapy and information on the charity’s services throughout the day.
Every day 81 people in Scotland are diagnosed with cancer, with 54 of those people living in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Cancer Support Scotland provides practical and emotional support for those living with cancer, as well as their friends, family and carers.
Cancer Support Scotland has a network of support groups throughout the country and offers free complementary therapy and one-to-one talking therapy (counselling) sessions, which provide support to patients before, during and after their treatment.
This year Cancer Support Scotland will be moving to its new premises in the Calman Cancer Support Centre at Gartnavel Complex, where it can offer new services such as online talking therapy and an in-house salon providing expert advice on anything from hair loss to chiropody. The move will allow the charity to treble its current capacity and directly help 1,400 people every year.
The charity currently runs 3,000 complementary sessions a year, supporting more than 500 people through a programme of six sessions. St. Enoch Centre will be raising money for the Take Care Appeal, which will fund these support sessions for those living with cancer in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
The new partnership will enable Cancer Support Scotland to accommodate more people in its new centre and having a presence in St. Enoch Centre will provide an ideal opportunity to reach potential service users and inform them of the help available to them.
Anne Ledgerwood, Marketing Director at St. Enoch Centre, said: “We are extremely proud to be supporting Cancer Support Scotland as our Charity of the Year 2012. Our staff in the Centre are excited to start the fundraising activities in the knowledge that the funds we raise will help such a worthwhile charity in Glasgow and the West.”
Colin Graham, Chief Executive of Cancer Support Scotland said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the St. Enoch Centre has chosen Cancer Support Scotland as its Charity of the Year. It will be a huge honour having our brand displayed in such a well-known and successful establishment.
“The next year is sure to be an extremely fun one not just for us but for all the shoppers at the St. Enoch Centre. There will be lots of fundraising events and people will have a chance to see what our charity does, as well as help us to raise vital cash allowing us to continue and expand on our work”.
The mass shoulder rub will begin at 2.45pm on Saturday, July 28. Participants should gather on the ground floor of the Centre outside of Boots where they should make their £1 donation and members of Cancer Support Scotland will demonstrate the basic technique before the event begins.
