Glasgow Ignis Women's 10k

Thursday, 24 May 2012

Cancer Support Scotland would like to congratulate all those who braved Sunday’s (13th May) wet and stormy weather to run the Glasgow Ignis Women’s 10k and helped raised vital funds for the charity.

Team Cancer Support Scotland joined 12,000 other women at Bellahouston Park to take on the gruelling route. While there might be a few stiff legs and sore muscles our runners can rest easy knowing they have done their bit in helping those living with cancer.

Based at Gartnavel Hospital Complex the charity provides practical and emotional support for people affected by the disease, including family and friends. All money raised will help us offer free of charge complementary therapies, talking therapies and support groups.

One of our runners was 43-year-old Joanne Bishop from Glasgow. She said: “I participated in order to thank Cancer Support Scotland for the support they gave to my friend last year. She appreciated the free hypnotherapy and reflexology services she received during her medical treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma.  Thanks to the kindness of my friends and relatives, they have helped me to raise £600 for the charity. I completed it in a time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 14 seconds, coming in at 4963rd place.  In context, even though I was more than twice as slow as the fastest runner, I was more than twice as fast as the last lady over the line so I was very happy with that”.

Cancer Support Scotland Chief Executive Colin Graham said: “Even though the weather was very cold and wet, this did not dampen the spirits of our runners.  We know how dedicated our supporters are and willing to get involved and support us come wind, rain and shine and it did all of that on Sunday!  The funds our runners have raised are vital to ensuring we continue our unique emotional and practical support.”

There is still the chance to get your running gear on and fundraise for Cancer Support Scotland this year. We’re calling on those across Glasgow to step out and support the charity by running, jogging or walking the 5k Big Fun Run in Bellahouston Park on 14th July.
