Walking on Sunshine!

We are delighted to announce the success of our second Heel Appeal sponsored walk! Not only were there over 100 dedicated participants but we have raised approximately £9,000 for our services. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to take part (especially those who took on the longer route in heels!) and those who came to volunteer!

They say no pain no gain - with my painful joints felt very proud completing the walk and raising £800 for a service which I regularly used and was so valuable when fighting cancer - Tricia MacDonald

The sun was shining as our Heel Appealers took off on the new 3 mile long route. Following our trail of blue balloons our participants walked proudly for Cancer Support Scotland spreading the word about our services around the West End of Glasgow. They also made sure to stop and take a #Shoefie! On their return we had delicious baking for everyone to tuck into and fantastic live music in the Centre from the talented Gerry Lyons and his Open Mic Night singers.

A huge thank you to Fiona McLearie for agreeing to be our Heel Appeal Champion this year!

We wanted to let everyone know what a great supporter Fiona is of our services. After having used them herself she now not only regularly supports us by attending events, but she gives up her spare time twice a week to come and man our Out of Hours services. Thanks Fiona!

A big thank you to one of our Ambassadors Judith Ralston who came along to the Heel Appeal to say a few words about our services and show her continued support.

Heal-Appeal00003

Thank you once again to everyone who helped make the Heel Appeal happen. If you are interested in taking part next year please get in touch with us at [email protected]. Registration will open in Janury 2017. We look forward to hearing from you!

*Heel Appeal 2016 will be held on Sunday the 20th March – register interest today!*

The Heel Appeal is Cancer Support Scotland’s sponsored walk event which takes the saying to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” literally. Take on the mile walk in memory of a loved one, as a personal challenge or just to join in with the fun!

The Heel Appeal was successfully launched in March 2015 with over 70 walkers raising £6,116 for our services and we had our first Heel Appeal Days held by Inchinnan Guild and SQA’s Glasgow office. Next year we hope to raise even more funds and awareness for Cancer Support Scotland so let us know if you want to join in! Check out last year’s Heel Appeal Pack here for more information.

Host a Heel Appeal Day in your school or workplace!

Join in with the fun and host a Heel Appeal Day in March (or any day in the year that suits you) in which pupils or work colleagues bring a £1 to donate to Cancer Support Scotland and wear the wackiest shoes they own! Host races, raffles and games to make a great day for everyone.

“The Heel Appeal was a great day. My daughter, sister and myself had a fab time; the atmosphere was brilliant and we would definitely do it again!” – Jacqui Spence

Register your interest now by emailing [email protected] or call 0141 337 8199.

Glasgow University Cancer Support Scotland Society raise over £900! http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/glasgow-university-cancer-support-scotland-society-raise-over-900/ http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/glasgow-university-cancer-support-scotland-society-raise-over-900/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2015 11:40:19 +0000 http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/?p=1738

Glasgow University Cancer Support Scotland Society was started by student Melanie Patrick just over 9 months ago and has already made such a difference to Cancer Support Scotland. Melanie, with fellow group members Heather Corley, Tony Hon, Catriona Quinn, Aduku Obilor, Calum Lavery, Morgan McTiernan and Jessica To, the group has not only raised awareness of Cancer Support Scotland but also a fantastic £932 to go towards our support services.

The society have been working hard over the last few months volunteering and fundraising. They've been raising funds in a variety of ways with Glasgow University Law Society at their Casino Night, by holding a Pub Quiz at Curlers Rest and with 4th year RCS students with a concert at Landsdowne Theatre.

We all wanted to raise awareness (and funds) for an amazing local charity. I have a family member who has suffered, and beaten, cancer twice so I understand how much it affects not only the patient but also all their family and support system...everyone is very keen to be involved next year and by raising £930 this year it gives us a target to beat £1000 next year! - Melanie Patrick (GUCSSS President)

Glasgow Girls' Brigades raised £2230 for Cancer Support Scotland

Over the past few months 15 Girls' Brigade troops have been working hard to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Support Scotland. They did a fantastic job as one company held a tea dance, other companies held bake sales on company evenings and cake sales after church services. 7th East Kilbride raised the highest amount of £370. The 7th East Kilbride girls were taught different recipes by their leaders, made a cook book and some girls also baked cakes and sold them to family and friends.

We were delighted to have the support of the Girls' Brigades as they raised awareness of Cancer Support Scotland across Glasgow. After completing their amazing fundraising activities we invited the winning Brigades and some officers to the Cancer Support Scotland Centre to show them exactly where their vital donations were going.

Surge in skin cancer prompts sun safety reminders http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/skincancer/ http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/skincancer/#respond Wed, 29 Apr 2015 10:43:29 +0000 http://www.cancersupportscotland.net/?p=1526 Cases of skin cancer in Scotland have increased by more than 30 per cent in a decade, prompting calls for Scots to take more care in the sun.

Scotland’s new Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood has urged people to take care on hot days and avoid using sunbeds, in the wake of the new figures. The latest data shows there were 1,172 diagnoses of melanoma in 2013, making it the sixth most common cancer in Scotland.

Dr Calderwood said: “The best way to cut your chances of getting melanoma is to reduce your exposure to the sun, and avoid using sunbeds. The most common symptom of melanoma is a new mole, or a change in the appearance of an existing mole.

Melanomas are usually irregular in shape and contain more than one colour. They can be larger than usual moles and might itch or bleed. If you have any of these symptoms, make an appointment at your GP surgery as soon as possible.

The incidence of cancer across all types has increased in Scotland, although this is linked to the growing elderly population. The total number of cancers, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers which are rarely fatal, rose from 27,095 to 31,013 between 2003 and 2013.

More people are surviving with the disease – there are 176,000 people in Scotland who have been diagnosed with cancer over the last 20 years and who are still alive.

This represents three per cent of the Scottish population. Colin Graham, chief executive of charity Cancer Support Scotland, said the data did not reflect the impact cancer has on patients and their families.

He said: “To support the person with cancer, family members and carers often have to give up their jobs but they don’t get the information or the psychological support they often need to help them cope.”

The Heel Appeal was a great day. My daughter, sister and myself had a fab time; the atmosphere was brilliant and we would definitely do it again! - Jacqui Spence

Cancer Support Scotland's first ever sponsored walk event saw nearly 70 supporters 'walk a mile in someones else's shoes' from the Cancer Support Scotland Centre to the Hilton Grosvenor. There was a fantastic array of funky shoes chosen for the task in hand from sky-scraping high heels and flippers, to ski boots and slippers.

We wanted to give one of our supporters the opportunity to really stand out and be counted as a champion of Cancer Support Scotland. We asked Pamela Burns to start the walk as she embodies everything we stand for.

The Centre gave me back a bit of me time. I find the Centre very calming, welcoming and I don't feel isolated. They are always friendly and I always find them the same way every time I go. - Pamela Burns

With spirits high throughout the morning the walkers really made the event a special occasion. They all took on the walk as one big team for one cause: to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Support Scotland. We're still totting up the total amount raised (£3,000 and counting!!) but, as you can see in the clippings below, we featured in the press which means we have already seen some awareness raised!
