Currently, only 7% of the UK population leave a charitable gift in their will, even though 74% support a charity during their lifetime according to latest Legacy Foresight's 'Legacy Market Snapshot’ 2011. Leaving a gift to Cancer Support Scotland in your will can make a big difference. We rely on the generosity of individuals to help us provide our services to those affected by cancer now and in the future. Without legacies, the level of support we provide would be very different.
The saying 'Every Penny Counts' really is true!
You don’t need to leave a lot of money to make a difference. Every gift, small or large, helps us support people affected by cancer and their families. With cancer rates set to double by 2030, we will need to grow and advance and in order to provide essential services to those affected by cancer.
How leaving us a legacy will help
Legacies help us maintain the Calman Cancer Support Centre services, enabling us to provide more talking therapy appointments and helping people move forward after a diagnosis of cancer.
A small share of your estate could mean we able able to set up a support group in your local area, allowing people to discuss the issues they face in a confidential setting. It could also allow us to train volunteers to deliver complementary therapies to people affected by cancer in their local community.
When the time is right for you to include a charity in your will, please remember Cancer Support Scotland.
We are delighted The Rt. Hon David Cameron MP, Rt. Hon Nick Clegg MP and Rt. Hon Ed Miliband MP are backing a nationwide campaign to increase the number of people in the UK who leave money to charity in their wills. It urges individuals across the UK to pledge 10% of their estate to charity. With effect from April 2012 any estate which leaves at least 10% (of its taxable wealth) to a charitable cause will be able to take advantage of a reduced rate in inheritance tax, from its current level of 40% down to 36%. Please ask you lawyer for further information.
David Semple, Joint Chair of Trustees and ex-partner in law firm Semple Fraser LLP said “this is an excellent scheme and one that will doubtless be warmly received by many charities like Cancer Support Scotland– especially in the current economic climate, where demand on many charities is growing while overall funding for many charities is falling.”

You should consult your solicitor when completing a codicil or reviewing your will and please do not write on or amend your current will, as this could become invalid.
Types of legacy

You might also consider a reversionary legacy – or lifetime gift. This could be appropriate if you need to ensure that relatives or friends are provided for after you die. You can leave your house or income for their benefit during their lifetime. On their death, the property or any remaining income can be passed to Cancer Support Scotland.
