Thursday 15th June saw the launch of the Scottish Government’s Scottish Cancer Strategy which sets out their vision for the next ten years to ‘improve cancer survival and provide excellent, equitably accessible care’.

It was developed in collaboration with people with lived experience and wider partners including the Scottish Cancer Coalition, of which Cancer Support Scotland is a member.

Cancer Support Scotland CEO, Michael MacLennan, said:

“We welcome the publication of the Cancer Strategy for Scotland, which we have engaged in as part of the Scottish Cancer Coalition, and that it recognises the need for wellbeing support both before, during, and after treatment. With more people being diagnosed and living with cancer across the country, providing ongoing support  for both physical and mental wellbeing is more vital than ever.

“As a charity which provides a range of tailored services across Scotland, we also welcome the stated ambition within the Strategy’s 10-year vision to provide ‘Person-Centred Care For All’. Through doing so we can ensure that people are able to not just receive support at the time when they most need it, but to provide it to others too, building a community and network which will improve the lives for those affected by cancer.

“We look forward to working with the Scottish Government and the NHS to strengthen and expand the amount and array of wellbeing support in order realise the Strategy’s ambitions and vision. As an organisation funded through public donations, we would also emphasise the need for funded models for charities delivering these vital services, given how crucial this is to support the NHS in the services that it delivers. All of us at Cancer Support Scotland will remain focused on improving the wellbeing of all those affected by cancer, and to play whatever role we can in future.”

The Scottish Government’s Cancer Prehabilitation Report was published this morning. Our Interim CEO, Michael MacLennan, has commented on the importance of implementing cancer prehabilitation across Scotland:

“At Cancer Support Scotland we understand first-hand just how devastating a cancer diagnosis can be both for the person with cancer, and their family and friends. It is so important there is advice and support readily available before treatment begins.

We welcome the Scottish Government’s Cancer Prehabilitation Report, which emphasises the need for physical and psychological support in the period after receiving a cancer diagnosis. It further highlights the need for dedicated staffing, funding and removal of socio-economic barriers to ensure this support is extended to all that need it.

As a national charity we are committed towards providing this support through our counselling, complementary therapy and peer support group services- doing so without NHS funding thanks to the generosity of the public. We maintain that it is of upmost importance funding is put in place to ensure people all throughout Scotland are able to access cancer prehabilitation support, and that together we can improve survival rates and quality of life. Sadly, this is currently too often not the case”.

Breast cancer charity Walk the Walk funds vital support for people across Scotland affected by cancer.

Breast cancer charity Walk the Walk has granted £50,000 to help reduce the waiting list for Scottish cancer patients, and their families, who are in desperate need of wellbeing support.

These amazing funds will allow Cancer Support Scotland to provide 174 people with a full course of wellbeing support when they need it most. Due to an increase in demand waiting lists for some services are up to 12 weeks, Walk the Walk’s generous grant with allow this vital support to be provided much quicker.

  • Counselling – providing patients with the tools to deal with their diagnosis
  • Complimentary Therapy – in person sessions, designed with relaxation in mind
  • Befriending – informal wellbeing calls to help reduce isolation, fear and anxiety

Michael MacLennan,  Interim CEO of Cancer Support Scotland, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a £50,000 grant from Walk the Walk. We understand these are challenging times for everyone and these incredible funds will allow us to continue supporting those that need us, when they need us most. Each year we continue to see a rapid rise in demand for our services, and thanks to the generosity of Walk the Walk we’ll be able to provide 174 people with 6 vital wellbeing appointments.”

Susan (52) from Glasgow, received counselling here at Cancer Support Scotland after her cancer diagnosis. She said: “My mood was very low and I was often feeling anxious. I was also spending a lot of time in my flat, not going out much and felt as if sometimes people didn’t understand why I wasn’t feeling great, as my treatment had ended. I didn’t understand that myself if I’m honest. I still struggle at times but I’ve received so much non-judgemental support, motivation, encouragement, and laughter (which is so important) through these sessions”.

Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of breast cancer charity Walk the Walk said: “I was deeply upset to hear about the unacceptable length of time people are having to wait for wellbeing support, following their cancer diagnosis. Whilst 12 weeks might not seem very long in some people’s worlds, if you’ve just found out you have cancer, it’s a lifetime! In 2023, Walk the Walk is releasing £1 million to help fund innovative support like that provided by Cancer Support Scotland. It’s a tough time for cancer patients across Scotland, so I’m delighted that Walk the Walk has been able help so many people.”

Entries are now open for The MoonWalk Scotland 2023, organised by breast cancer charity Walk the Walk. On Saturday 9th September, thousands of women and men wearing decorated bras will set off from Holyrood Park in Edinburgh to walk an overnight half or full marathon through the streets of the capital.
