Former Interns Stories

Ruth IronsideFrom mid August to mid September 2011 I was fortunate enough to undertake a Graphic Design internship at Cancer Support Scotland. Alongside Lorna Hull, another Graphic Design Intern, our role required us initially to come up with an identity for the charity and establish some kind of continuity throughout all printed materials.

Our role required us to design a wide range of printed materials including brochures, leaflets, posters, booklets and business cards, to other items such as PowerPoint presentations,Word documents, and forms, at all times ensuring the charity's branding and image was effectively utilized in each item.

The internship gave me the opportunity to work within an office environment, work with others and learn from other colleagues from different backgrounds, with different skills and knowledge. Since my internship I have successfully managed to gain full time employment as a Junior Graphic Designer.

I would greatly recommend taking up an internship at Cancer Support Scotland, whether it be a graphic design role or otherwise. It has been a truly invaluable experience and one which allows you to put your skills to good use whilst contributing to a very worthwhile cause.’

The internship programme here at Cancer Support Scotland has been a very challenging yet rewarding experience. Firstly being given the opportunity to gain the necessary skills needed to be able to work in a business environment was crucial, as university can only teach you so much. Real experience is needed to succeed. I can only thank the team here for seeing the potential in me that I knew was there.

After several weeks in the programme, lady luck was on my side as I was hired as a Fundraising Assistant, proving there is always room for progression. I’m happy I have been able to use my degree in a practical sense, and hopefully there will be more to come. I look forward to meeting new interns as they come through and hope they realise the learning potential a programme like this offers.

Having made the decision to pursue a career as a Press Officer I was on the look-out for somewhere which would offer me on-the-job experience in order to improve my CV and give me a better chance of attaining such a position. Cancer Support Scotland came along at exactly the right time.

After spending three months here as the charity’s Press and PR Intern I can’t praise the internship enough as it has given me the chance to acquire the skills that are required of a Press and PR Officer. My daily round involves producing press releases, writing up case studies, ‘selling-in’ stories, updating the website and developing Cancer Support Scotland’s social media presence, among other things.

While university can equip you with the basic skills it doesn’t compare to actually being in the work place and I am hopeful this internship will help open new doors for me.

Liz Gorrie- Press and PR Intern

My time at Cancer Support Scotland was short but invaluable experience. As a Press and PR Intern it was challenging but extremely rewarding. After graduating from University I was seeking experience to gain the necessary skills within a working environment. This was the perfect opportunity to do this.

My main duties involved creating press releases, updating the website as well as increasing our social media presence. I highly recommend anyone to do this internship especially if they have a love for writing and want to get involved in PR. After working at this internship for a few weeks I was fortunate enough to be offered a full time job within another organisation. I was able to take this fantastic experience as well as the skills I had learnt at this internship and use towards my new job.
