History of the Building

Black and White Chapel

We are extremely grateful to Glasgow Building Preservation Trust for their continued support and dedication to our new home, The Calman Cancer Support Centre. The building itself has a rich history that goes all the way back to 1904 and has gained international interest in it's restoration and future uses.

Built by Sir J.J. Burnett at the turn of the century, and at the height of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the former Gartnavel Royal Hospital Chapel was designed to be a haven for people staying at the then City Lunatic Asylum further up the hill. Burnett is one of the most successfull architects to have ever come out of Scotland and here at Cancer Support Scotland, we are very excited at the prospect of our new home being one of his creations.

Also within the building is some fabulous stained glass artwork by Robert Anning Bell, a nationally significant artist and craftsman.

We are extremely pleased that all the stained glass is currently being refurbished off site and shall be brought back into the chapel before our move in date of October 2012.

Adding to the building will be a sympathetic and elegant extension that will house our therapy suites for all our service users.

We are extremely grateful to Austin-Smith:Lord for all their hard work and exciting plans for our new home!

If you would like more information on the building please just let one of the Cancer Support Scotland team know!
