Despite Scotland having the worst rates of cancer in the UK, cancer survival rates are improving and this means that more and more people are living with the impact of the disease. This means our unique services will be even more in demand.
Recent statistics from Cancer In Scotland (NHS National Services Scotland, 2010) show that 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer in our lifetime which equates to more than the population of the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness and Stirling combined.
It is for these reasons that we realise the need for our services now and in the future. This is also why we know that our current accommodation will not meet future demand.
Operating from our temporary building in the grounds of Gartnavel is no longer a viable option. We do not have the space or the facilities, at present, to support our service users fully and with, on average, 14% more people walking through our doors each month, the situation needs to improve.
From our current accommodation we can treat up to 152 clients per month with 44% of referrals coming from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and 27% coming from other cancer charities such as Macmillan, Maggies and Clan. Referral from such large organisations highlights how vital our services are and therefore the extremely urgent need for us to move into larger and modern-day premises.
The Take Care Appeal is our immediate call to raise necessary funds to allow us to purchase and fit the Gartnavel Chapel and transform it into the Calman Cancer Support Centre. The new centre will provide people affected by cancer with a place where they can relax and step away from the hospital atmosphere within Gartnavel.
